Orca Month Kick-Off Event on San Juan Island

Join us in a parade to celebrate the Southern Resident orcas! We will walk as a pod through Friday Harbor, carrying life size dorsal fins, then return to the Grange Hall for refreshments, storytelling, and presentations. Please email lovel@sanjuans.org  to register for the parade.

About The Event

Information on the Event: Join Friends of the San Juans, Wild Orca, and Orca Network as we kick off Orca Action Month, and honor the Lasting Legacies of the Southern Residents and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act.

Come prepared to share your stories of the whales and mingle with other folks passionate about the Southern Resident killer whales!

1:00 pm — Meet at the County Courthouse south lawn to pick up your Southern Resident killer whale parade fin. We will walk as a pod through town and end at the Grange Hall.

Approximately 2:00 pm (when the parade ends!) — All are welcome at the Grange Hall for refreshments, storytelling, and a live-stream connection to other Orca Action Month kick-off events being held around the Salish Sea. We will watch keynote speakers Jay Julius in person, and Florian Graner virtually at the Langley Whale Center on Whidbey Island.

About our Keynote Speakers:

Jay Julius, W’tot lhem, is the former Chairman of the Lummi Nation, a full-time fisherman and father, and the Founder and President of Se’Si’Le. Read Jay’s recent Earth Day message on sanjuans.org. Florian Graner started Sealife Productions, a family company that films and produces wildlife documentaries. Florian now holds a Ph.D. in Marine Biology with specialization in marine mammals. He brings passion and extensive subject knowledge to his films. Learn more.
